When one of the first trailers for Super Mario Bros movie open Seth RogenDonkey Kong, there were many people who said the same thing – “Doesn’t he look like Seth Rogen?” There seems to be an entirely simple reason for that, as the actor recently explained in an interview Comicbook.com‘, when he explained that he simply doesn’t ‘do voices’. While discussing his role as a Nintendo character, Rogen said:
“I was very clear, I don’t do voices. And if you want me to be in that movie, he’ll look like me and that’s it. And that was the beginning and end of that conversation. I was like, If you want Donkey Kong to sound a lot like me, I’m your guy. But it seems like It worked, you know, I think in the movie and in the game I think all you really know about Donkey Kong is that he throws barrels and he doesn’t like Mario very much That honestly kind of ran with him was this idea that he hates Mario, that they’re good as a feud relationship, that he annoyed with him, that he didn’t want to get stuck with him, that he wished he was on this adventure without him. That was funny and that was kind of the root of the character and it was kind of born out of gaming legends.”
Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong wasn’t the most controversial choice in the Mario movie.
At the original casting of Super Mario Bros movie It was announced, no one really thought about Seth Rogen’s take on Donkey Kong, with all focus placed on Chris Pratt as the voice behind the latest iteration of Nintendo’s most iconic video game character. The internet took an almost unanimous hatred for the idea of the Bratt being cast as Mario over existing voice artists, that is, basically any other actor in the world.
However, while much of the noise has died down, Pratt is still keenly aware that there are some people who remain unfazed by his performance after hearing only a few lines in the trailers for the movie. He recently addressed the backlash, saying:
“Go see the movie and then we can talk. I really think that once you’ve seen the movie, in all honesty, I think you probably need to watch it twice. In all honesty, the answer is that’s an enthusiastic fan base, and I understand I’m a part of it. This is the soundtrack to your youth, And you don’t want someone to come along and cynically destroy it as a cash grab from the movie. I completely understand that you don’t want that to happen and there were a lot of hearts, souls and minds devoted to making sure that didn’t happen.”
Fans will get a chance to see Pratt and Rogen in all their vocal glory when Super Mario Bros movie Released April 5th.
