Princess Diaries is one of the best Disney live-action movie classics. The first film, released in 2001, was a complete success and helped launch the careers of many of its stars such as Anne Hathaway and Mandy Moore. The second, which hit theaters in 2004, was just as popular.
Development of a third sequel to continue the story has been rumored for several years now, and last year Disney finally confirmed it. However, the sequel may not include some of the original cast, even as Hathaway herself has repeatedly expressed her desire to wear the crown of Amelia Mignonette of Thermopolis Rinaldi, Queen of Genovia.
However, the lead star made it clear that she wouldn’t return unless co-star Julie Andrews did too, and the veteran actress wasn’t very supportive of the idea of continuing. The one who seems ready to make a comeback is Sandra Oh.
Entertainment Weekly recently contacted the Golden Globe winner about The Princess Diaries 3 and whether or not she would have it:
“I’m ready for queen. Call me! I’m dying to see how Gupta develops in the world.”
Oh was part of the first installment of the saga playing the vice-principal of the school where Mia attends, Gupta, who does everything she can to make then-Queen Clarisse feel comfortable in her institution.
What do you expect from Princess Diaries 3
In the first movie, Mia is an ordinary girl who is suddenly surprised to have her grandmother in her life. However, the old woman not only seeks her to rebuild the bond with her granddaughter years after her father’s death, but also finds her because Mia is heir to the throne of Genovia, and has to groom her to occupy that place, something the young woman does not want at first.
The second installment begins with Mia already preparing in Genovia for her eventual appointment as Queen, as she has to find a husband because the law says she must be married to take the throne. Meanwhile, another potential heir emerges, Nicholas (Chris Pine), who is being suggested by his uncle as Mia’s main opponent.
But the two heirs to the throne end up falling in love while seemingly enemies, and eventually the throne is rejected and the law changes so Mia can wear the crown.
Princess Diaries 3 It can follow Mia’s life as Queen of Genovia, either with Nicholas, alone or with a new partner. It could also make the queen prepare the future heir to the throne or her son or daughter. But, should Hathaway not return, the movie could be more like a reboot and have a new hero living out a similar story to Mia’s.
Disney is also currently working on another long-awaited sequel to one of the most popular live-action films, Freaky Fridaywith Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis returning as the main stars.
