Red, white and royal blue is an upcoming romantic comedy. Based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Casey McCoyston, directed by Matthew Lopez, who previously directed the Tony Award-winning play inheritance. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lopez said he read McQuiston’s book back in 2020 and wanted to make it into a 100-page movie.
“I fell madly in love with the characters and wanted to bring them to life on screen. I was also excited by the idea of shooting scenes set in the world of the presidency and the British royal family. I teased unabashedly.” [producers] Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schecter back me up in the studio directing it. The thought that someone else might make this movie filled me with unbearable jealousy.”
Returning to his work on stage, inheritance It was “Gay Epic” inspired by Howards End. With this new movie, Lopez was able to tell another gay love story, one he rarely saw on screen. “A love story between two young men that is hopeful, funny, and deeply romantic,” he described it. Of course, adapting a book doesn’t come without its own set of challenges.
“[The biggest challenge was] How Casey’s story is presented in a way that honors the novel but that doesn’t result in a three-hour movie. There are a lot of great scenes and characters in the book that didn’t make it into the movie because they didn’t fit. I don’t regret any of these decisions, but as a fan of the book, it wasn’t easy to make.”
The director and the making of the movie
The trailer opens with a split screen that introduces our two main characters. Alex Claremont Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez) is the son of US President Ellen Claremont (Uma Thurman). Prince Henry (Nicholas Galtzin) is a British prince and grandson of the King (Stephen Fry). While at the royal wedding, they got into an altercation that “takes the cake” in terms of international incidents.
They are thrown together for damage control, where they have to pretend to be friends with each other. It doesn’t look like it’s going well, even before Henry Alex. So they end up going from having to pretend they don’t hate each other to pretending they don’t like each other. It seems like it could be kind of complicated, emotionally to say the least. Galitzine said:
“As men, we find it difficult to express ourselves and express our feelings. But this was a fun thing to explore from an acting perspective. [I was] He tries to understand that this person is completely trapped by his upbringing and his family. And the rift that is being placed between his family and the person he loves is something that is very difficult to deal with. That was probably the biggest challenge, trying to make that real and real.”
The trailer reveals that a few of the people close to them find out. Ellie Bamber, who played Dove willow (2022), playing Princess Bea, Henry’s sister, in this. You’ve heard her ask Henry “do you love him,” though you don’t see her do that because of the way the trailer is edited. Eileen also appears telling Alex that he needs to know if he has feelings for him forever.
