On-screen adaptation for Lessons in Chemistryy takes audiences back to the 1950s, an aesthetically iconic but always controversial period of Americana that didn’t cater to women much at all. The homemaker’s life was glorified and so was any young woman in society at the time. The show’s plot revolves around a certain woman named Elizabeth Zoot (Larson), an up-and-coming chemist who dreams of becoming a brilliant scientist, but finds herself stifled by the perpetual patriarchy around her that traditionally does not allow women to pursue such a profession. At one point, she was kicked out of the lab, and scrambled to find a way back to the work she loved. It comes in the ironic form of a TV host job on a cooking show called “Dinner at Six.” As they prepare different recipes for cameras and in front of a live audience, they also incorporate small science lessons into each one. This provides a second form of education for all the housewives and young girls who join the watch.
